What is an Ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound is safe and pain-free and produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, involves the use of a small transducer (probe) and ultrasound gel placed directly on the skin.

High-frequency sound waves are transmitted from the probe through the gel into the body part needing to be assessed. The ultrasounds transducer collects the sounds that bounce back from the tissues and the computer then creates an image which is used by the specialist to diagnose the condition.

Ultrasound examinations do not use radiation (as used in x-rays), thus there is no unsafe radiation exposure to the patient.

Common scans done at the clinic

Musculoskeletal

Tendon tears, or tendinitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder, Achilles tendon in the ankle and other tendons throughout the body.

Abdominal scan

Cartilage tears can occur with sprains. Treatment can sometimes involve wearing a brace during an activity to protect from further injury.

Pelvic

Pelvic scans can show abnormalities of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, cervix and the uterus

Testicular

Testicular torsion, epididymitis, varicocele, testicular pain and other testicular conditions can be investigated by ultrasound scans.

Whatever may be the cause of your pain, it can become a real nuisance and in some circumstances can be extremely debilitating.

It’s important to remember that you are not alone! Millions of people around the world suffer from abdominal or joint pain and the key to overcoming it is understanding what is causing you pain and knowing what treatment options are available to you.

It is very rare that we will recommend surgery, and often operations are only ever required when non-surgical treatment does not work. The Droitwich Knee Clinic has a history of operating on only about 20% of its patients. We try all non-surgical options before we recommend surgery and all else has failed to reduce pain. Keyhole operation (in specific cases only), osteotomy (to redistribute weight), half joint replacement and total knee replacement are the surgical treatment options available.

One thing that osteoarthritis does is that it interrupts your activities of daily living and work making it very difficult to function. Left untreated it will affect the quality of life. So get your problems looked at now before it becomes a major problem, as the cost of getting this done now outweighs the cost of waiting for treatment after.
